Topper’s Mountain is a piece of fantastically good viticultural land and very picturesque to boot - a basalt cap of about 150Ha in a sea of granite on the New England Tablelands near Armidale, NSW. At an altitude of 900m, Topper’s is one of the few high altitude vineyards in Australia planted on beautiful old deep, free-draining red basalt soils. Food friendly, cool-climate, single estate wines made mostly from alternate varieties are the focus of Topper’s Mountain Wines.
Varieties planted include Nebbiolo, Tempranillo, Gewurztraminer, Tannat, Barbera & Petit Manseng.
Topper’s Mountain is owned by Mark & Stephanie Kirkby & their daughters & Mark has developed the vineyard from its birth in 1999. Planted area is 10Ha of which 1.1Ha was planted in spring 2000 with the balance planted in spring 2002.
